Poor Conditions Slow Tsunami Effort

The relief being provided to the inhabitants of the Mentawai Islands, Indonesia in the wake of Monday's tsunami has been hit by setbacks due to the weather.

An undersea earthquake of magnitude 7.7 triggered the event which has left 400 people confirmed dead and 300 still unaccounted for. The disaster occured at around 22:00 local time on 25th October, just 16 hours before the volcano Mt. Merapi erupted, leaving a suspected 30 people dead.

Aid is meant to be coming in the form of air-carried supplies but a shortage of helicopters and poor conditions are leaving the hardest hit areas still in need of vital supplies.

Haunting scenes hark back to December 2004 when a giant tsunami killed over 250,000 people.
